Tip of the Week
Tip for: 09.24.07
Holiday Books
Summary: Holidays are approaching and holiday books are on the most wanted list. Alexandria provides a way to temporarily shorten the time period for these items so that these items can be enjoyed by more patrons during the holiday season.
- Go to Edit and select Preferences.
- Select Policies and Global from the drop-down menus in the upper-left corner of the Preferences window. Then select Item policies.
- Establish a Holiday policy with a shorter than usual checkout period. Save the policy.
- Select Circulation from the policy type choices selections.
- For each Patron policy with the Item policy set to Holiday policy, set the limit of the number of items (for instance, set it to 1) to less than the usual number. For instance, if teachers may have 100 items, but you change the number to 1 with the Holiday policy paired with the Teacher policy, then it will limit the teacher to only 1 holiday item. Be sure to also set the checkout period to a shorter period for the teachers also if you want to also limit the length of time that they may keep the item.
- Save your policy changes.
- Gather the items for the next holiday about a month before the holiday.
- On the Circulation window, enter UI Holiday and press <enter>.
- Scan the barcodes of the holiday items to change them to Holiday policy.
- When finished, type a period (.) and press <enter>.
- Put the items on your Holiday shelf.
- At the end of that holiday period, return the items to the original policy by typing UR and pressing <enter>, then scanning the barcodes of the items that you wish to restore to their original policy.
- Type a period (.) and press <enter> to exit the Restore Policies mode.
Thank you,
