Z39.50 Searching
Summary: The Z39.50 feature is an add-on that is included as part of the A license. It is used to search other libraries that are outside of your LAN (Large Area Network) or WAN (Wide Area Network). There is a list already included in the Address Book that can be used to select certain libraries to make searchable from the Researcher using the Z39.50 Search option. Librarians can use this search to import an item’s record from the Details for the item selected.
To set Z39.50 preferences:
- Select Preferences from the Edit drop-down menu.
- Set the Library Information preference drop-down to Administration. Change the Local drop-down menu to Global.
- Click on the Address Books tab.
- Highlight the Standard Z39.50 Address Book.
- Double click the addresses to make searchable and change the Availability drop-down menu to Available.
- Click OK to close the Address window.
- With a Z39.50 address highlighted, you can use the icons beneath the address list to add, duplicate, edit, or remove an address. You can also ping the library to check your connection. The Notebook icon can be used to save the order of the addresses if you have changed it.
- Click the Save button to save changes to your Address Book preferences.
To Access and Search the Z39.50 Search:
- Open your Researcher client or access your catalog from a web browser. From the Librarian client, select Researcher from the Show drop-down menu.
- Click on the Z39.50 tab.
- Use the Library drop-down menu to select the library to search.
- Enter search parameters in the Boolean formatted search interface as desired.
- Click Search.
- Double click items to view details as desired.
- To import a record into your data from another library, click on the Import link at the bottom of the item’s Details.
- Click Start on the Import window that appears once you have confirmed the item settings prior to adding the item to your collection.
Thank you,
The Alexandria Staff Librarians
