Tip of the Week
Tip for: 01.23.2006
Exporting Records
Summary: It has come to our attention that some of you may be working on exporting records to send to OCLC. Although this is a fairly easy process, some of you may not be familiar with how to export your records in a MARC or MicroLIF format, so this week's tip will go over that process.
To export item records:
- Choose Export from the File menu.
- Leave the Export Type drop-down menu set to Export Items.
- Set the Operations drop-down to MARC or MicroLIF. Although both are generally acceptable, MicroLIF is easier to view as it is a format of the MARC record that we can read, whereas the actual MARC format is one long string of characters.
- Use the Sort By drop-down menu to choose the desired order for the export.
- Set the Select By drop-down menu to choose the items to include in the export. If you want to export everything, leave this set to All Items.
- Click Run to begin the export.
- On the Save Alexandria window that will appear, name the file and indicate the location where you would like to save the export file. Your Desktop is usually the most convenient.
- Click Save to complete the process.
Whether you are exporting items to send to OCLC or to share with other libraries in your area, we think you will find being able to export out your items useful.
Thank you,
The Alexandria Staff Librarians
