Tip of the Week
Tip for: 11.23.2005
Checking Items out to For Library Use and Other System Patrons
Summary: With the holidays upon us, many of you are probably setting aside holiday books to share with your patrons. In this week's tip we will discuss how you can make it so those special books don't show as Available to your patrons when they search the catalog.
You can do this using our system patron called For Library Use. This is patron 3. The system patrons allow for items to be checked out for an indefinite period of time, without having to be checked out to you personally.
To check an item out to a system patron:
- Type in the barcode of the desired patron. For example, to use For Library Use you would type 3 and press <enter>. This will make For Library Use your current patron.
- Scan or type the barcodes of the items to check out to the system patron. (If you type the barcode, press <enter>).
To check the item back in:
- For multiple items, type B and press <enter> or change the Mode drop-down menu to Bookdrop. Then scan or type in the barcodes of the items. (If you type the barcode, press <enter>).
- For a single item, type B and scan or type in the barcode of the item. (If you type the barcode, press <enter>).
The other system patrons are 1 - Lost Copies, 2 - Discarded Copies, 4 - On Repair, 5 – On Order, and 6 – Archived Items. We think you will find this helpful when trying to make a copy's status show accurately in the library catalog.
Thank you,
The Alexandria Staff Librarians
