Importing a Transaction Script

Summary: At one time or other you have probably all wished that you had some way of remotely circulating items. Recently, we discussed the new Web Librarian features of Alexandria. This week's tip will discuss another way of circulating remotely using a Transaction Script file created in any word processor or using Alexandria's VWP from a Researcher or other client. 

Any computer can be used to circulate in Alexandria by opening up a word processing document and typing or scanning the desired commands and barcodes. You can then use the * command to import the transaction file into Alexandria. The newest versions of Alexandria even offer the option of Import Transaction Script from the File menu.

To create a text file:

• Open a new document.
• Type or scan desired command (i.e. I, IB, ., B, etc.).
• Type or scan appropriate patron or item barcodes as needed. Also, change the commands as needed for remote circulation files by either typing the command and then pressing <enter> or scanning the command barcode associated with the desired command.
• Go to File and select Save As and save document as a text file.

To import the file into Alexandria:

• Make a backup or run an archive.
• In the Command line, type * and press <enter>.
• Select the file to be imported from the appropriate saved location.
• Click Start to begin import.
• After import is completed, check the Transaction Log for any issues or problems. 

Use this tip as a way to make circulating remotely after doing a book talk in a classroom or other "remote" situation quick and easy.
