New Lexile Code Field
Summary: Many customers have purchased the new Lexile functionality to enhance their ability to help patrons find books they can read successfully. Lexiles have been a part of Alexandria since later versions of 5.4.4.1. New to version 5.5, however, is the Lexile Code field. This code is used to define special characteristics about the item. These codes are:
- BR represents items that are good for a Beginning Reader.
- NP is used for items that are Non-Prose such as poetry books, which can be hard to Lexile.
- NC is used to represent items with Non-Conforming Text, which indicates that the complexity of the text isn't consistent with the content. These types of books are helpful for patrons who read at a higher level then their developmental level.
- AD denotes Adult Directed items, which are best read aloud to younger readers.
- IG represents Illustrated Glossary, which denotes items offering definitions of words, including illustrations, etc. These are often useful for research.
To add a Lexile Code:
- Select Items from the Show menu.
- Use Find or Browse from the Item menu, to select the item you wish to add the lexile code to. For a new item you are cataloging, select Add New Title.
- Enter the appropriate code as mentioned in the Summary into the Lexile code field of the Publication tab.
- Click Save.
This information can be viewed in the Current Item pane of the Circulation window as well as the Details window for an item from the Researcher. For more information on Lexile Codes, see the March 2002 Lexile Times Newsletter from MetaMetrix, INC.
For those who may not be aware, some of the other functionality that the Lexile add-on offers is being able to view the Lexile level of the current patron and item when checking out books. Being able to update records against the MetaMetrix database, as well as being able to have the Researcher offer suggested titles within the appropriate lexile range using the Help Me Find a book feature. Please see our Lexile website for more information.
Thank you,
The Alexandria Staff Librarians
