Tip for: 01.03.2005
Yes, You Can Discard Those Books
Summary: Though there was a tip on this subject last May, we thought it wise to go over the Discard Mode command again, due to recent Alex-Net messages. This command allows you to set a reason for items being discarded and bypass the Discarded Item window (which comes up asking why the item is being discarded). This command saves time by only indicating the reason one time, and also makes the Discarded Items patron current automatically.
Using the Discard Mode command:
- Type DM and then click the <enter> key.
- From the window that comes up, use the drop-down menu to indicate the reason items are being discarded.
- Click OK.
- You can skip the step of indicating the reason from the Start Discard Mode window by typing the reason after the DM command before clicking <enter> (e.g. DM Outdated Information).
- Once you click <enter>, the mode will change and the Discarded Items patron will be your current patron.
- When you are finished, just hit the "." and press <enter> to go back to Check In / Check Out.
If you forgot to use the DM command and the Discarded Item window appears, don't worry. You can still access the discard mode by following the directions below.
From the Discard window:
- Type 2 and click <enter> to bring up the Discarded Items patron.
- Scan or type in the barcode of your first book.
- Use the drop-down menu to indicate the reason the item is being discarded. The Other option allows you to add reasons that aren't already indicated. By leaving the Remember the reason box checked, the indicated reason will be added to the drop-down menu for future use.
- Click on the Discard and change modes button at the bottom of the window (instead of OK or Cancel). This will change the Circulation mode and each item scanned will be discarded for the reason indicated — without the Discard window appearing after each item is scanned or typed in.
These two options will save you time when you need to discard many items at one time. Simply ensure that the reason is accurate for the different items. To help you do this, try grouping them together and then reenter the DM command with the new reason for each group of items.
Thank you,
The Alexandria Staff Librarians
