Changing Data Field Terminology

Summary: You can customize your library by using the Item and Patron Management preferences to change the terminology on several data fields. Renaming these fields allows you to more easily identify the information with terminology more consistent with your institution. This tip discusses the fields that can be changed and how to change them.

Patron Terminology:

On the Patron window, you can change Government ID (SSN), School ID (Student #), School, Homeroom, Second Location, and Level (Grade).

To change patron terminology:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Use the drop-down menu labeled Administration to change to Patron Management.
  • Go to the Terminology section on the bottom half of the window.
  • Customize the allowable fields to your desired terminology.
  • When you have made the desired changes, click Save.

Item Terminology:

On the Copy window, you can change Funding Source and Shelving.

To change item terminology:

  • Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  • Use the drop-down menu labeled Administration to change to Item Management.
  • Notice the section toward the bottom of the window labeled Other Settings.
  • Change Caption for Special Funds and Caption for Shelving Location to the desired terminology.
  • Click Save.
