Tip for: 09.30.02
Downloading Records from the Library of Congress
For Mac:
Make sure you use Netscape, an older version, to download your records from the LOC. Version 4.7 should work; the new one doesn't work; IE for OS X and Safari also fail due to LOC web issues.
-Access the Library of Congress website at http://catalog.loc.gov.
-Select Basic Search.
-Type in the desired search criteria (i.e. Ella Enchanted or Levine, Gail Carson). Then select the appropriate index (i.e. Title, Author, etc.)
-From the resulting list, select the desired version of the title. If only one title comes up the proceed to the next step.
-Select the tab that says MARC Tags from the four tabs near the top of the page. This will allow you to view the MARC information prior to saving it.
-Scroll down to the bottom and select the radio button that says MARC format and then click the PRINT, SAVE button
-This takes you to a grey screen with one long line of numbers and letters.
-Save the file as Text.
-Rename the file *******.txt
-Select Import from the File menu in Alexandria, and then select the saved text file.
-This record will then be added to your collection.
