This guide was created to help you install and operate the Palm Desktop, Keyspan Adapter, and smartscan programs.
Installation order
In order for the Palm to sync to the computer properly it may require the use of a USB Keyspan Adapter. Because of this necessity you are encouraged to install the software in the following order:
1.Keyspan Adapter software
2.Palm Desktop
3.Smartscan
Installing the Keyspan Adapter
Make sure the Keyspan Adapter is plugged into your computer before beginning installation. Double click on the installer titKeyspanUSBSerialv23.zip, which is located at:

Once the Keyspan Adapter is plugged into your usb port and you have downloaded the keyspan software you are ready to begin. Open the KeyspanUSBSerialv23.zip by double clicking it. Once the extraction process has completed you should have a file called keyspanUSAdrvr 2.pkg on your desktop. Double click on keyspanUSAdrvr 2.pkg to run the installer.

There is a license agreement will ask you to read and agree to in order to complete the installation process. When you are ready you may click continue to the next step.

Select the drive you wish to install the Keyspan software and click continue.
Using the Keyspan Serial Assitant
Now that the software is installed you will need to make sure that the Adapter is working properly and is detected by the computer. This process is simple, in most cases the device will show up on the device list as soon as you run the application. If it is not showing up on the list you may want to unplug the usb connector and plug it in again or try another USB port.


NOTE: Due to the nature of usb to serial hardware, there is an inherent latency between when data is written to the driver and when it is sent over USB to the adapter and then written to the serial port.
Palm Desktop
Palm Desktop is a vital to being able to effectively use the Palm scanner. Primarily Palm desktop is used to install programs and download transaction scripts. You can find the latest version of Palm desktop here.
Here are a few screen shots you should see when installing Palm Desktop:

The license agreement will ask you to read and agree to it in order to complete the installation process. When you are ready you may click continue to the next step.

Use the default Easy Install and then click on Install.
Palm Setup Assistant
The Palm Setup Assistant is used to create new users. If your Palm already has a user, select Locate existing users, and then click Next. This will close the Palm Assistant. If your Palm does not have a user assigned to it, one will have to be created. To create a user on your Palm, click on Create new user, and then click next.

Make sure “create new user” is selected then click Next.

Create a user name then click Next.

Click OK.
Manual Setup

At this point you are now ready to click on the HotSync Manager icon and
configure your connection setup.
There will be two tabs on the top of this screen select the Connection settings tab. Make sure that you ONLY select the usa192....1-port .

After the initial installation process has completed you will need to install smartmarc. Go to HotSync menu on the top of the screen then down to Condiut Settings.

Click the Add To List button on the right hand side of the screen. Find the SmartScan.prc file and select it.
Place the Palm in the cradle and press the HotSync button, located at the base of the cradle. This will install the SmartScan software on the Palm. You can now launch the SmartScan software on your Palm and start scanning books.

To open the SmartScan software on your Palm, click on the Home icon in the lower portion of your screen, and then click on SmartScan.


Using the Palm For Inventory
Place the Palm in the cradle and press the HotSync button, located at the base of the cradle. This will install the SmartScan software on the Palm. You can now launch the SmartScan software on your Palm and start scanning books. To open the SmartScan software on your Palm, click on the Home icon in the lower portion of your screen, and then click on SmartScan.
To download the barcodes you have scanned into SmartScan, place the Palm in the cradle and press the HotSync button on the cradle. The text file will be sent to :Users::Documents:Palm:Users.


To import the file into Alexandria, type an asterisk (*) at the command line in the
Circulation screen, then press Enter on your keyboard. You can also drag and drop the file onto the Circulation screen of Alexandria. Either way will bring up an import window. Click Add File, and then find your text file. It will be in :Users::Documents:Palm:Users folder. Select the file and then click on Run. At this point you should be able to see your items in the transaction log.
Congratulations, you are finished!
