Installing the Palm software on OS X

Technical Note Summary:

This document covers the installation of components needed to use the Palm III Scanner with Macintosh OS 10.2 and higher. Required components include the Keyspan Adapter driver, the Palm Desktop software, the SmartScan Conduit and SmartScan program.

Installing the Keyspan Adapter

Make sure the Keyspan Adapter is plugged into your computer before beginning installation. Double click on the installer titled KeyspanUSAdrvr14.pkg, which is located on the Scanner Solutions CD. The installer can be found on the Scanner Solutions CD in the following path: Macintosh\Palm Desktop Installer \Palm Extras \USB files\KeyspanUSAdrvr14.pkg.

If you cannot find the KeyspanUSAdrvr14.pkg on the CD, please contact COMPanion's Technical Support department and request a new CD. The latest driver can also be found on Keyspan's website at http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/PDAadapter/downloads/#MacXLatest. Please refer to Image 1.

After double clicking on the KeyspanUSAdrvr14.pkg file, you will be asked for your administrative password or phrase for installation. Enter your password and click on OK. Please refer to Image 2.

Choose Continue through the Introduction page (Image 3), the Read Me page (Image 4), and the Software License Agreement page (Image 5). Please Agree to the Software License Agreement page (Image 6).

On the Select Destination page (Image 7), select the drive you wish to install to and then click Continue. Click Upgrade on the Easy Install page, and the installation will proceed (Image 8).

Installing the Palm Desktop software

From the Scanner Solutions CD, follow this path: For Macintosh\Palm Desktop Installer\Palm Desktop Mac OS X. Please refer to Image 9. Double click on the Palm Desktop Mac OS X installer.

Click Continue on the next two screens. Please refer to Image 10 and 11.

NOTE: THE LATEST SUPPORTED VERSION OF THE PALM DESKTOP SOFTWARE FOR OS X IS 4.0. PLEASE CONTACT TECHNICAL SUPPORT AT (800) 347-4942 IF YOU NEED A COPY OF THE PALM DESKTOP 4.0 SOFTWARE.

Click Agree on the license agreement. Use the default Easy Install and then click on Install (Image 13).

Choose the folder where you want to install the Palm software. Please refer to Image 14.

NOTE: WHEN INSTALLING THE PALM SOFTWARE, IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU CHOOSE THE APPLICATIONS FOLDER.

The installation will prompt you to restart your computer after the process is complete, click on Yes. Please refer to Image 15.

Next, you will be asked for your administrative password or phrase for installation. Enter your password and click on OK. Please refer to Image 16. The installation will now begin.

After the installation completes, the Palm Setup Assistant will appear, now choose Next. Please refer to Image 17.

The Palm Setup Assistant is used to create new users. If your Palm already has a user, select Locate existing users, and then click Next. This will close the Palm Assistant. If your Palm does not have a user assigned to it, one will have to be created. To create a user on your Palm, click on Create new user, and then click Next. Please refer to Image 18.

Enter a user name for your Desktop Software and click Next. Please refer to Image 19.

A new user will be created from the name specified on the previous page. Click Done to finish the process. Please refer to Image 20.

Once installation is successful, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click OK, and then restart your system. Please refer to Image 21.

Installing the SmartScan Conduit

The latest SmartScan Conduit can be obtained by contacting Technical Support at (800) 347-4942. Once you have contacted Technical Support and obtained the SmartScan for OSX Conduit, unstuff it with Stuffit Expander and move it to the following location: Library\Application Support\PalmHotSync\Conduits. Please refer to Image 22.

Installing SmartScan on the Palm

Open the Palm folder, and double click on the HotSync Manager. Make sure usa192….1-port is checked on the tab titled Connection Settings. Please refer to Image 23.

Click on the HotSync menu, and select Install Handheld Files. Please refer to Image 24.

Click the Add To List button on the right hand side of the screen. Find the SmartScan.prc file and select it. Please refer to Image 25.

Place the Palm in the cradle and press the HotSync button, located at the base of the cradle. This will install the SmartScan software on the Palm. You can now launch the SmartScan software on your Palm and start scanning books. To open the SmartScan software on your Palm, click on the Home icon in the lower portion of your screen, and then click on SmartScan.

To download the barcodes you have scanned into SmartScan, place the Palm in the cradle and press the HotSync button on the cradle. The text file will be sent to <Hard Drive>:Users:<Mac User Name>:Documents:Palm:Users. Please refer to Images 26 and 27.

To import the file into Alexandria, type an asterisk (*) at the command line in the Circulation screen, then press Enter on your keyboard. You can also drag and drop the file onto the Circulation screen of Alexandria. Either way will bring up an import window. Click Add File, and then find your text file. It will be in <Hard Drive>:Users:<Mac User Name>:Documents:Palm:Users folder. Select the file and then click on Run.
