TECHNICAL NOTE SUMMARY:
This guide will walk you through installing the SmartScan software onto your Palm Pilot. The information in this walkthrough is only compatible with Macintosh computers.

NOTE: IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE PALM DESKTOP INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER, YOU MAY SKIP DOWN TO THE' INSTALLING SMARTSCAN ON YOUR PALM PILOT' SECTION OF THIS GUIDE.

INSTALLING PALM DESKTOP FOR MACINTOSH:

First, insert the Scanner Solutions CD into your Macintosh computer. Open up the Palm Software CD icon and then open the For Macintosh icon. Open the Palm Desktop Installer folder, then open the Palm Extras folder. Finally, open the USB Files folder and double-click the Install Keyspan USA 19Q file to run the Keyspan Adapter setup. Click Continue, then Agree, then Install. You may be prompted to disconnect the Keyspan Adapter. If so, disconnect it and click OK. You will then be prompted to reconnect the adapter and to click OK.

NOTE: FOR BEST RESULTS, COMPANION RECOMMENDS PLUGGING THE KEYSPAN ADAPTER INTO A PORT ON THE COMPUTER ITSELF OR A POWERED USB HUB. PLUGGING THE ADAPTER INTO THE KEYBOARD OR ANOTHER DEVICE MAY CAUSE THE PALM PILOT TO NOT HOTSYNC.

Second, insert the Scanner Solutions CD into your Macintosh computer. Open up the Palm Software CD on your desktop. Double click the CD icon and then double click For Macintosh. Next, double click the folder labeled Palm Desktop Installer. Double click on the Palm Desktop Installer icon to begin the installation process. Please refer to Image 1.1.

Click Continue on the splash screen and click Continue again to view the License Agreement. Click on Agree and then click on Install to select where the Palm Desktop will be installed. Finally, click Install one more time to begin installation. Once the installation is complete, a window will appear asking for a user name. (Please see notes at the bottom of the page before continuing) Enter a user name and click Continue. You will now be asked if you wish to set up the Palm Pilot for HotSync operations. Click on Setup Now and from the dropdown menu select Keyspan USB DB9, then click Done. The setup window should now close and you will be prompted to restart the computer.

NOTE: IT IS RECCOMENDED THAT YOU INSTALL INTO THE DEFAULT DIRECTORY TO KEEP CONTINUITY WITH OTHER TECH NOTES DEALING WITH SMARTSCAN AND THE PALM PILOT.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU WRITE DOWN THE USER NAME YOU SELECTED. WHEN YOU HOTSYNC YOUR PALM PILOT, TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FILES, THEY WILL BE STORED IN A FOLDER TITLED WITH THE USER NAME YOU SELECTED. ALSO, ANYTHING DONE IN THE PALM DESKTOP WILL NEED TO BE DONE UNDER THE SAME USER NAME SELECTED DURING INSTALLATION. COMPANION CORPORATION RECCOMENDS YOU USE THE NAME OF YOUR SCHOOL AS THE USER NAME

INSTALLING SMARTSCAN ON YOUR PALM PILOT:

Now that you have the Palm Desktop installed on your Macintosh, we are ready to install the SmartScan software. Insert the Scanner Solutions CD into your Macintosh and double click the CD icon that appears on your desktop. Double click the For Macintosh icon, then double click on the SmartScan For Mac Installer folder. Double click the file labeled SmartScan Conduit Install and you will see a window similar to Image 1.2. Click on the Install button to begin installation.

With the Palm Software CD still in the drive, open the Palm Desktop Software by clicking on the green icon near the time along the top of your screen, then click Open Palm Desktop, or open your Hard Drive, then open the Palm folder, and double click the Palm Desktop icon. Next, click on Hotsync along the top, then Install Handheld Files. Click the Add to List button on the right to bring up a browse window. Click Desktop on the right hand side. If Desktop is grayed out or unclickable, then ignore this step. Open the Palm Desktop CD, and then open For Macintosh. Open the Smartscan for Mac Installer folder and highlight the Smartscan.prc file. Click Add File to put it in the list. Lastly, close the Install Handheld Files window.

Once installation is complete, click on Quit to exit the installer. To complete the installation, place the Palm Pilot into the download cradle and press the Hotsync button. The Palm Pilot will be synced with the desktop and SmartScan will be installed on your Palm Laser Scanner.
