This document explains the differences between the two Macintosh Research Work Station (RWS) applications in Alexandria V5.

The Alexandria V5 program has two versions of Research Work Station (RWS) installers for the Macintosh.

The standard Macintosh Research Work Station (RWS) installer is designed for current hardware. It offers multiple search options including: Simple and Boolean search; Explore; Browse; Study Program and Z39.50 Search. The minimum requirements for the Macintosh Research Work Station (RWS) are Macintosh OS 8.6 or higher, PowerPC processor, and 64 MB of RAM. The minimum requirements for OSX users are OS 10.2 or higher, and you must meet the minimum system requirements for running OS X. OS X users must also be on Alexandria 5.4.4 or higher.

The 68K Researcher is designed for libraries using older Macintosh computers. It is limited to Simple and Boolean searching, and is not supported with versions of Alexandria beyond 5.42. The minimum requirements for the 68K researcher are Mac OS system 7.5.5 or higher, a 68040 processor, and 16 MB of RAM. In older versions of the Macintosh OS, Open Transport must be enabled. By default, Open Transport is disabled and must be turned on manually. You can turn on Open Transport under Apple-Control Panel-Extensions Manager. Look for Open Transport, making sure there is a check mark next to it. The check mark next to Open Transport indicates it is running. In later versions of the Macintosh OS, the check mark was changed to an X.

NOTE: THE 68K RESEARCHER IS NOT SUPPORTED WITH ANY VERSION OF ALEXANDRIA BEYOND 5.42. COMPANION CORPORATION RECOMMENDS RUNNING THE WEB MODULE FOR CUSTOMERS WHO WANT TO RUN A 68K RESEARCHER WITH VERSIONS OF ALEXANDRIA BEYOND 5.42. INTERNET EXPLORER 4 OR NETSCAPE 4 ARE BOTH RECOMMENDED FOR USE WITH THE WEB MODULE.
