Kaaren's Corner
By Kaaren Linton, Librarian/Alexandria Trainer
Featuring: Librarian’s Corner
The Alexandria website is full of many good things, but the very best part (and, I may be just a little biased) is Librarian’s Corner. While it’s tucked away under the Support tab, this is a spot that offers a variety of things for the librarian. Let’s explore Librarian’s Corner. No GPS will be needed, just travel to our website, http://www.goalexandria.com, and click on Support. Next, click on Librarian’s Corner and you’re there!
Allow me to give you the grand tour.
Tip of the Week
Many of you have signed up for the Tip of the Week listserv, but, did you know that the past tips have been archived for your use? When you click on the Tip of the Week link, you will see the current tip and, on the right side, there are links to the archives sorted by date and by subject.
Alex-Net and Other ListServs
When you select this option, you are taken to the web page that tells you about Alex-Net, COMPanion Announcements and Tip of the Week. The main purpose, however, of this page is to allow you to easily subscribe (or unsubscribe) to any of these services.
Alex-Net is our users’ group that provides a forum for Alexandria users to share tips and tricks, ask or answer questions, and help each other solve problems.
COMPanion Announcements is a listserv that will email you information on new products, technologies, services, and our monthly newsletter. Instead of wondering when the next version of Alexandria or the latest scanner models will be available, you’ll be amongst the first to know!
e-Newsletter Archive
These e-newsletters have been coming out for a few years now, and they are packed with information that might be useful to you. For instance, if you are a new user and didn’t know that Capstone Publishers provides 24 FREE ebooks to Alexandria users or you can’t find your copy of the newsletter so that you can activate this feature, you’ll be able to access that information quickly and easily in the e-newsletter archives.
Researcher Lesson Plans
Did you know that lesson plans are available for teaching students how to use Alexandria’s version 5 Researcher? You can select this option in Librarian’s Corner and download those lesson plans.
Just a note to v6 users—Lesson Plans are under development for version 6, and we’ll let you know when they are available.
Best Practices
This selection will take you to a group of documents that discuss topics of interest to librarians. Many times there are several ways to accomplish the same thing, but which way is the best? That’s the whole purpose of these articles — to help you decide which method is the best for your situation.
Big6 Lesson Plans
The Alexandria Staff Librarian / Trainers realize that teaching students information literacy skills is critical. With that in mind, we developed a series of Big6 lesson plans for various age groups—Super Three for K-2 and Big6 for elementary, middle and high school levels. These lesson plans are in PDF format and are free, so be our guest!
Librarians Corner is not meant to be a “dead” site. We are committed to continuing to add other resources that will be of benefit to our Alexandria users. So, come back often! ∞
